CSB sweeps Macalester, picks up eighth MIAC win

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict volleyball team took care of business Wednesday night, sweeping Macalester 3-0 in a MIAC match in St. Paul, Minn.

The win marks the eight conference win of the year for Saint Benedict and keeps the team in second in the conference standings with one game left in the regular season. CSB – which won 25-17, 25-12 and 25-16 – is now 16-8 overall and 8-2 in the MIAC.

The first set Wednesday night was close to start, and the Scots (8-19, 0-10) took a slim lead, but a pair of kills by Briana Schmiesing put CSB up 10-7. Macalester tied the set at 10-10, and kept things close, but three straight kills from Schmiesing helped Saint Benedict pull away for the win in set one.

Hunter Weiss had three straight kills as part of an 8-2 run to put CSB up 10-2 early in set two, and CSB never looked back. Both Liz Schultz and Haley LaValle had a pair of service aces late to help put the set away.

Schmiesing had two service aces as part of a 9-2 CSB run to start the third and final set, and CSB eventually went up 15-3. The Scots went on an 8-0 run to make it 15-11, but Morgan Holthaus had a pair of service aces and CSB was able to pull away for the win.

Schultz and Weiss both finished with seven kills and Schmiesing added six. Megan Pekarek finished with 22 assists and Haley LaValle led the defense with 19 digs. Allison Roehl added 10 digs, and both Madison Weiss and Lauren Mathews had four block assists.

India Medaris led all hitters with nine kills and Sofi Ascencio had nine assists. Medaris also led the Scots' defense with 12 digs.

CSB returns home Saturday, Oct. 28, to wrap up the regular season when it hosts Concordia at 3 p.m. in Claire Lynch Hall.
