WINONA, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict softball team split its MIAC opener Wednesday night, losing 9-5 in the first game to Saint Mary's but winning the second 5-3 in Winona, Minn.
In the second game of the day, Saint Mary's took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second, but CSB tied the game in the third when
Courtney Wissbaum doubled and came around to score on an RBI single by
Megan Toninato. The Cardinals took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the inning, but the Blazers tied the score again in the sixth on an RBI single by
Madison Mikolich.
The Blazers took the lead for good in the top of the seventh when they used five hits and one Cardinal error to score three runs.
Becky Gigstad reached on an error, Wissbaum singled and
Kate Deming doubled to load the bases, and they all came around to score on a bases-clearing double by Toninato. Saint Mary's added one run in the final inning, but CSB's lead held up.
Toninato finished 2-for-4 with four RBIs to lead CSB, which had 11 hits. Deming, Wissbaum and Mikolich all added a pair of hits.
Kiela DeVlaeminck threw all seven innings and earned the win. She gave up three runs on 10 hits with three strikeouts.
The first game was also back and forth until the Cardinals took the lead for good with a five-run fifth inning. Saint Mary's (13-7, 2-2) took a 3-0 lead in the second, but CSB tied the game in the third thanks to an RBI double by Toninato and an RBI single from
Sara Wennerstrand.
The Cardinals added a run in the bottom of the third, but CSB tied the game again in the fourth on a solo homer by Mikolich – the second of her collegiate career. The Cardinals batted around in the fifth and took advantage of five hits and three CSB errors to score five runs – all unearned. The Blazers added one run in the sixth when
Claire Boatman reached on a fielder's choice and eventually scored on an SMU error.
Toninato led CSB with two RBIs in the first game, and six different players had a single hit.
Cassie Meyer threw the first 4.2 innings and took the loss after giving up eight runs on 10 hits.
Claire Haddick threw the final 1.1 innings and gave up one run on two hits.
CSB is now 13-7 overall and 1-1 in the MIAC. The Blazers return home Saturday, April 9, when they host Carleton at 1 p.m. CSB also hosts Gustavus at 1 p.m. Sunday, April 10.
