ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – After having its Saturday games postponed again, the College of Saint Benedict softball team was looking to make the most of its one doubleheader of the week Sunday afternoon when it hosted Gustavus.
The Gusties had other ideas, however, beating CSB 5-1 in the first game and wrapping up the day with a 10-8, 10-inning, come-from-behind win in the second game. Saint Benedict is now 13-9 overall and 1-3 in the MIAC.
CSB took a 3-0 lead over Gustavus (13-9, 3-1) in the first inning of the second game thanks to RBI singles from
Madison Mikolich,
Kiela DeVlaeminck and
Karlee Pfaff, and the Blazers made it 5-0 in the second thanks to three Gustavus errors. Gustavus made it a 5-2 game thanks to a pair of runs in the second, and got within one, 5-4, thanks to two hits and a CSB error in the fourth.
CSB pushed its lead back to two, 6-4, when
Sara Wennerstrand hit an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth, but three more Gustie hits and a Blazer error put Gustavus up 7-6 in the top of the fifth.
Emilie Antony doubled and scored on an RBI single by
Claire Haddick in the bottom of the inning to tie the game at 7-7, and that's where the score stayed until the 10
th inning.
Jena Willis hit a three-run homer in the top of the 10
th to give Gustavus a three-run cushion.
Karlee Pfaff had an RBI single in the bottom of the inning to get one run back, but CSB left a pair of runners stranded and the Gusties held on for the win.
Kate Deming finished with three hits to lead CSB, which had 13 total hits. Antony and Pfaff each added two hits and Pfaff had two RBIs.
Kiela DeVlaeminck threw the first 4.1 innings and gave up seven runs on 11 hits with four strikeouts, but Haddick took the loss after throwing the final 5.2 innings and giving up three runs on five hits. She struck out a career-high seven batters.
CSB was unable to string together hits in the first game. The Blazers finished the day with eight hits, but scored just one run on Gustavus pitcher Hannah Heacox – who finished the day with 15 innings pitched and 14 strikeouts. The Gusties got on the board in the second, and added four runs on three hits and a CSB error to go up 5-0 in the third. CSB got a single run in the fourth on an RBI double by Antony, but that's as close as it would get.
Wennerstrand had two hits to lead CSB.
Cassie Meyer threw the first four innings and took the loss after giving up five runs on six hits. She struck out two batters. Haddick threw the final three innings and struck out two batters.
CSB returns to action Tuesday, April 12, when it hosts Concordia in a makeup game from April 2. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. on the CSB campus.
