ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict softball team dropped a MIAC doubleheader to St. Thomas, which leads the league and is ranked 13
th in Division III, Tuesday afternoon in St. Joseph.
The Tommies hit four home runs in the two games and won the first game 8-1 and the second 6-1. The Blazers are now 19-17 overall and 7-11 in the MIAC with a pair of conference doubleheaders remaining in the regular season.
UST (31-5, 18-2) scored all the runs it would need in the first inning of the first game. The Tommies scored one run on an error, and three more on a three-run homer by Brenna Walek to go up 4-1. They added another run in the third on a CSB error, and the Blazers scored their lone run of the game in the fourth when
Kate Deming singled and scored on an RBI single by
Sara Wennerstrand.
The Tommies had a two-run homer and an RBI single in the fifth to end the scoring.
Deming,
Megan Toninato and Wennerstrand all had a hit for CSB, which had three total hits to the Tommies' nine.
Cassie Meyer took the loss on the mound after giving up eight runs on nine hits.
Nicole Nelson reached on an error and came around to score on an RBI double by
Madison Mikolich in the second inning of the second game to put CSB up 1-0, but that's the only run the Blazers would score – and their only hit of the game. The Tommies tied the game in the third, and used a solo home run in the fifth to take the lead for good. They added a two-run homer in the sixth and a two-run single in the seventh.
Mikolich had CSB's only hit of the game and the Tommies had 10 hits.
Claire Haddick threw the complete game and gave up six runs on 10 hits. She struck out four batters.
The Blazers are scheduled to be back in action Wednesday, April 27, when they host Carleton at 3:30 p.m. CSB ends the regular season Saturday, April 30, at St. Kate's.
