ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict softball team wrapped up its home season with a sweep of Carleton Wednesday night. The Blazers played through windy, rainy conditions and came away with a 4-3 win in the first game, and used several big hits to win the second 10-2 in six innings.
With one doubleheader left in the regular season, Saint Benedict is 21-17 overall and 9-11 in the MIAC. CSB has won 20 or more games in each of head coach
Rachael Click's first four seasons. The Blazers are currently in sixth in the MIAC.
The Knights (9-25, 3-15) scored a pair of runs in the first inning of the first game on an RBI single and an RBI sac fly. The Blazers scored one run in the first on an RBI groundout by
Megan Toninato, tied the game in the second when
Emilie Antony doubled and later scored on a passed ball, and took a 3-2 lead in the third on an RBI double from
Sara Wennerstrand.
Carleton tied the game in the top of the seventh on an RBI single, but
Nicole Nelson singled to start the bottom of the inning, advanced on a wild pitch and then a passed ball, and eventually came around to score on an error to end the game.
Toninato finished with three hits to lead CSB, which had 12 total hits. Wennerstrand and
Madison Mikolich each added a pair of hits, and Toninato, Wennerstrand, Mikolich and Antony all doubled.
Claire Haddick threw the first 6.2 innings, but
Cassie Meyer earned the win on the mound striking out the final batter in the seventh inning. Haddick gave up three runs on eight hits with two strikeouts.
In the second game the Blazers got on the board in the second inning when Mikolich singled then later scored on a passed ball, and the Knights hit an RBI single in the third to tie the game. CSB, however, broke the game open with eight runs in the bottom of the inning. Wennerstrand had an RBI double and Antony cleared the bases with a three-run homer.
Kate Deming added a two-run double and Toninato had an RBI double, and she eventually scored on a passed ball.
The Knights kept the game going with an RBI single in the fifth inning, but the Blazers ended the game early in the sixth when
Nicole Nelson doubled, advanced on a single by Mikolich and came around to score on an RBI single by Antony to end the game.
Antony finished the game 2-for-2 with four RBIs to lead CSB, which had nine hits. Mikolich had two hits and Deming finished with two RBIs. Meyer threw four innings to earn the win. She gave up one run on four hits.
Victoria Ofsthun threw the final two innings and gave up one run on four hits.
CSB wraps up the regular season Saturday, April 30, when it travels to St. Paul to take on No. 17 St. Kate's.
