CSB softball falls to Macalester

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict softball team dropped a MIAC doubleheader to Macalester Saturday afternoon in St. Paul. The Scots won the first game 4-3, and the second 7-5.

Saint Benedict is now 19-15 overall and 7-9 in the MIAC. With three conference doubleheaders remaining in the regular season, the Blazers are in sixth in the conference.

In the first game of the day, Macalester (13-23, 6-12) scored a pair of first-inning runs on a two-run homer. CSB made it a one-run game in the second on a pair of Macalester errors, and the Blazers took a 3-2 lead in the third on an RBI double from Sara Wennerstrand and an RBI single from Nicole Nelson.

Kate Deming singled and made it to third in the top of the fifth, but the Blazers failed to score. Macalester scored the eventual game-winning run in the bottom of the inning on an RBI triple.

Deming had two of CSB's six hits to pace the Blazers. Cassie Meyer threw the first 4.2 innings and took the loss after giving up four runs on six hits. She struck out two batters. Kiela DeVlaeminck threw the final 1.1 innings and struck out two batters.

The Scots took an early lead again in the second game thanks to an RBI double and a two-run single in the bottom of the first. CSB got one run back in the second on a solo homer by Nicole Nelson – her fourth of the season. Macalester added one more run in the second, and the Blazers got within two in the fourth on an RBI double by Madison Mikolich.

The Scots scored all the runs they would need in the fourth when they scored three runs on a fielder's choice and a two-run single. The Blazers scored a pair of unearned runs thanks to two Scot errors and a two-run double by Becky Gigstad in the sixth to make it 7-4, and added one more run in the seventh on an RBI single by DeVlaeminck, but left runners on first and third to end the game.

Nelson finished with a pair of hits to lead CSB, which had eight total hits. Claire Haddick took the loss on the mound after giving up four runs on five hits in two innings of work. Meyer gave up three runs on four hits in the final four innings.

CSB is at home for a pair of conference doubleheaders Sunday and Monday, April 24 and 25. The Blazers host No. 13 St. Thomas at 1 p.m. Sunday, then take on Carleton at 3:30 p.m. Monday in a makeup game.
