CLERMONT, Fla. – College of Saint Benedict softball head coach
Rachael Click didn't waste any time in picking up the 75
th coaching win of her career.
In CSB's second game of its spring break trip in Clermont, Fla. – and the Blazers' sixth game of the season – Click guided CSB to a 10-4 win over Eastern Connecticut to push her career coaching record to 75-48. Saint Benedict is 5-1 overall so far in 2016.
The Blazers started the day with a 13-3, five inning win over Loras. After a pair of scoreless innings, CSB went up 4-0 in the third thanks to an RBI groundout by
Megan Toninato and a two-run double by
Kiela DeVlaeminck.
CSB broke open the game in the fifth when it scored nine runs and nearly batted through its order twice to go up 13-3. DeVlaeminck added three more RBIs to her total when she reached on an error and on a single to center and Toninato had another RBI when she reached on an error.
Kate Deming also had an RBI single, and the Blazers took advantage of four walks and one hit-by-pitch. Loras scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth, but the game ended after five.
Deming finishing 3-for-4 with an RBI and DeVlaeminck was 2-for-4 with five RBIs to lead CSB, which had just six hits.
Cassie Meyer threw four innings to earn the win. She gave up no runs on two hits with three strikeouts.
Claire Haddick threw the final inning and gave up three runs on three hits.
In the second game of the day, Eastern scored twice in the top of the first inning, but
Sara Wennerstrand,
Claire Boatman and
Courtney Wissbaum all had RBI singles and
Nicole Nelson had an RBI groundout to help put CSB up 5-2. CSB added three more runs in the third on a two-run triple by
Becky Gigstad and another RBI single from Wisbaum, and Wennerstrand added an RBI groundout in the fourth and an RBI single in the sixth for the final score.
Wennerstrand, Boatman and Wissbaum all finished with two hits for CSB and Wennerstrand had three RBIs. Gigstad and Wissbaum each had a pair of RBIs for the Blazers, who had 10 total hits.
Kiela DeVlaeminck threw all seven innings to earn the win. She gave up four runs on nine hits with four strikeouts.
CSB returns to action in Florida with games at 1 and 3 p.m. Monday in Clermont. The Blazers play UW-Stevens Point at 1 p.m. EDT and Rochester Institute of Technology at 3 p.m. EDT.
