CLERMONT, Fla. – The College of Saint Benedict softball team pushed its winning streak to six games with two more wins Monday afternoon at The Spring Games in Clermont, Fla. The Blazers, who are now 7-1 overall, started the day with a 10-5 win over UW-Stevens Point, and wrapped up Day 2 of their trip with an 11-3, six-inning win against Rochester Institute of Technology.
The Blazers have now hit double-digits in scoring in each of their last five games dating back to their March 4 doubleheader with UW-Stout. CSB has scored 10 runs three times in the last five games, 11 runs once and 13 runs against Loras Sunday.
In the first game of the day, CSB took a 3-0 lead early on Stevens Point thanks to a three-run first inning that included an RBI single from
Sara Wennerstrand and an RBI double from
Kiela DeVlaeminck. UWSP took a 5-3 lead in the bottom of the second, but DeVlaeminck added an RBI single to her tally and
Karlee Pfaff had an RBI double in the third to tie the game at five.
Wennerstrand had another RBI single in the fourth to put CSB up 6-5, and
Samantha Sakihara hit into an RBI groundout as part of a two-run fifth inning. Wennerstrand wrapped up scoring in the first game with a two-run homer in the top of the sixth.
Wennerstrand finished the first game 3-for-4 with four RBIs.
Megan Toninato and DeVlaeminck each had two hits and DeVlaeminck finished with a pair of RBIs. CSB had 12 total hits to Stevens Points' seven.
Cassie Meyer threw all seven innings and gave up five runs on seven hits with four strikeouts.
In the second game of the day, Toninato had an RBI single to put CSB up 1-0 in the first, but RIT took a 3-1 lead in the top of the third inning. The Blazers tied the game in the bottom of the third thanks to another RBI single from DeVlaeminck, and they took the lead for good with three more runs in the fourth thanks to a bases-clearing double by Wennerstrand.
Kate Deming started a five-run sixth inning with a two-run triple, and Toninato added another RBI single to her daily total. Wennerstrand hit an RBI double, and came around to score on an RBI walk to end the game early.
Wennerstrand went 3-for-3 with four RBIs to pace CSB, which had 13 hits to RIT's five. Deming and Toninato each added two hits and two RBIs, and
Nicole Nelson and
Courtney Wissbaum both had two hits each. DeVlaemicnk threw all six innings and gave up three runs on five hits with four strikeouts.
CSB plays a pair of games Tuesday, March 22 before taking Wednesday off. The Blazers play Hamilton at 3 p.m. EDT and Hope College at 5 p.m. EDT.
