Blazers beat Augsburg, earn No. 6 seed in MIAC tourney

ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict basketball team is headed back to the MIAC Tournament.
 
The Blazers snapped a four-game losing streak earned its first postseason berth since 2012-13 Saturday afternoon with a 42-37 win over Augsburg in Claire Lynch Hall. The two teams entered the day with identical 9-8 MIAC records, and CSB overcame a slow start to come away with the win to extend its season.
 
CSB, which is now 15-10 overall and 10-8 in the MIAC, moves on to play third-seeded Gustavus at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 23, in a MIAC Quarterfinal game in St. Peter, Minn. The Blazers are 1-1 against the Gusties this season, including an overtime win in St. Peter and a one-point loss in St. Joseph this past week. This marks the first MIAC Tournament appearance for anyone on CSB's roster.
 
After a first quarter where neither team scored in double digits, the Blazers held onto a slim lead, 18-16, at halftime. After the Auggies (14-11, 9-9) tied the score at 18 to start the third quarter, Grace Wolhowe completed a three-point play and Ke'Avae Taylor got a steal and a basket to make it a five-point game, 25-20.
 
A pair of free throws by Chelsey Guetter made it a seven-point game, 29-22, with just over four minutes left, and the Blazers still led by five, 31-26, at the end of the third.
 
Augsburg cut the gap to two, 31-29, early in the fourth, and tied the game at 33-33 with 7:05 left, but Guetter scored, Alison Newton hit a free throw and Guetter scored again to push the Blazers' lead back to five. After Guetter's layup with 3:31 left, neither team scored again until Augsburg hit a free throw with 1:15 left.
 
Wolhowe hit a pair of free throws, then Augsburg hit a three to make it a three-point game, 40-37, with 50 seconds left, but CSB hit free throws and didn't allow the Auggies any good shots and held on for the win.
 
Neither team could get its offense going in the first quarter, and the Blazers led 8-4 after one. The Blazers pushed their lead to six on a three by Macy Kelly midway through the third quarter, but the Auggies kept fighting, and CSB's lead was down to two, 18-16, at halftime.
 
Guetter finished with 12 points to lead CSB, which shot 35.9 percent from the field. Newton added 11 points and Wolhowe and Niki Fokken each had five rebounds. The Blazers went 13-for-25 from the line and had 34 rebounds and 21 turnovers.
 
Jessica Lillquist led all scorers with 14 points for Augsburg and she also had nine rebounds. The Auggies shot 32 percent from the field, went 4-for-6 from the line and had 30 rebounds and 20 turnovers.
 
In the other quarterfinal game Tuesday, No. 5 Bethel is at No. 4 Concordia. The lowest remaining seed plays at No. 1 St. Thomas Thursday, Feb. 25, and the highest remaining seed is at No. 2 Saint Mary's that same night.
