Miller’s goal not enough in loss to Hamline

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict hockey team got on the board first Saturday against Hamline, and held a lead into the second period, but a pair of second-period goals by the Pipers took that lead away and were enough for the win as CSB fell 2-1 in St. Paul, Minn.

Saint Benedict (2-3, 0-3) had nine shots on net in the third and final period, including four in the final minute and a half of play after coach Jen Kranz pulled goalie Julie Carle to add an extra skater to the ice.

Junior Brigette Miller scored CSB's lone goal on the power play seven minutes in to the first period off an assist from Maddie Rainey to put Saint Benedict up 1-0. That lead held until the sixth minute of the second period, when Darby Dodds tied the game, and Dodds scored her second goal – this one shorthanded – in the 17th minute, and that proved to be the game-winner.

After Dodds scored her first goal, CSB had five shots in net in the next four minutes in an attempt to re-take the lead, but Hamline goalie Annie Juergens stopped all five. Miller finished with eight shots on net and Hannah Esselman and Stephanie Kirk each added four.

Hamline outshot CSB 37-31, but Carle made 35 saves to keep Saint Benedict in the game. Juergens finished with 30 saves.

The first game of the CSB/Hamline series, scheduled for Friday in St. Cloud, was postponed due to the winter storm and poor road conditions. A makeup date has not yet been set.

CSB returns to action Dec. 2 and 3 when it takes on Gustavus. CSB is in St. Peter Friday, Dec. 2, and hosts the Gusties at the MAC at 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 3.
