CSB falls to Cobbers in MIAC opener

SARTELL, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict hockey team gave up five first-period goals Friday and lost 6-2 to Concordia in the MIAC opener for both teams in Sartell, Minn.
 
The first period was a hectic one for both teams as there were six total goals scored – five by the Cobbers and one by CSB – and eight penalties assessed. The first goal of the period was scored just under three minutes into the game, and the final goal came with less than a minute to play.
 
All in all, 17 total penalties were assessed – 10 to the Cobbers and seven to CSB. Concordia scored a pair of power-play goals and Saint Benedict had one.
 
Concordia (2-0-1, 1-0) scored the first goal of the game in the second minute of the first period. After a quiet seven minutes, things heated up in the ninth minute with Tori Davis scored the Cobbers' second goal of the game. After that, three penalties were called within less than a minute, and Concordia scored twice more within the next three minutes – including a pair of power play goals.
 
The Cobbers' fifth goal of the game came in the 18th minute, and CSB got on the board with 59 seconds left in the first period when Elli Marvin scored her fifth goal of the season off an assist from Brigette Miller.
 
The second period was scoreless, and Saint Benedict scored again with five minutes left in the game when Courtney Conlin scored the first goal of her CSB career on the power play. She was assisted by Marvin. Concordia ended the scoring with two minutes left in the game.
 
Concordia had 35 shots on net to CSB's 31. Angel Hillstrom started the game in net and was pulled late in the first period. She made 11 saves. Julie Carle played the final 41 minutes and made 18 saves.
 
CSB and Concordia return to action Saturday, Nov. 12, when they play at 5 p.m. at Runestone Arena in Alexandria, Minn.
