Marvin & Miller Lead Hockey to Improbable Comeback

St. Cloud, Minn. -- Junior forward Elli Marvin scored twice and assisted another goal in the final six minutes of the game, and the College of Saint Benedict hockey team pulled off a dramatic 3-2 comeback victory against St. Olaf today (Jan. 16th). After trailing for the majority of the game, the Blazers scored three goals in the final 6:08, and two goals in the final 62 seconds to pull off the comeback.

Defenses dominated the first period. Neither team was able to score and the period featured just 10 total shots.

The Oles drew first blood in the second period. Ole forward Becky Weingarten took a pass from Abbey Smith and knocked it over the shoulder of Blazer goalie Dory Johnson. The Blazers successfully killed two penalties in the period to stay within one goal of the Oles heading into the second intermission.

The Oles added their second goal midway through the third period when Ole forward Riley Anderson scored off a sequence of passes from Megan Skelly and Jane Vezina.

The Blazers started to claw their way back with six minutes left in the third period, when Marvin found Ole goalie Cassie Alexander out of position and scored on a slapshot from point blank. That goal was Marvin's third of the series and was assisted by sophomore forward Brigette Miller.

With 1:30 left to play and trailing the Oles 1-2, the Blazers pulled Johnson to give themselves an extra skater advantage. With 1:02 left to play, Marvin sent a pass to Miller, who drilled it past the Ole goaltender and tied the game at 2-2.

With Johnson back in net and a minute to play, the Blazers were now tied with the Oles after having trailed since midway through the second period. With fifteen seconds left, Marvin took the puck around the blue line, deftly skated around the Oles defense, and deposited the puck in the net to provide her final heroics on the improbable comeback. That goal was Marvin's fourth goal of the two-game series.

In her first game in net in 2016, senior goalie Dory Johnson stopped 16 of 18 shots and picked up her first victory of the season.

With the win, the Blazers complete the weekend sweep of the Oles for the second straight year. They improve to 5-9-1 overall, 3-4-1 in the MIAC, and are now tied for sixth place in the conference.

Blazer hockey returns to action next weekend, when they will play a Friday-Saturday home-and-away series with Bethel University. Face-off for Friday night is scheduled for 7 p.m.
