Blazer softball splits with Gustavus

ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – Monday afternoon the College of Saint Benedict softball team played a stellar first game against St. Thomas and couldn't get its bats going in the second.

Thursday afternoon against Gustavus Adolphus, it was the opposite.

The Blazers' struggled at the plate in an 8-0 loss to the Gusties in the first game of the day, but bounced back for a 4-3 victory behind the arm and bat of Melissa Seldon in the second game on the CSB campus.

Saint Benedict, which is 13-9 overall and 2-2 in the MIAC, took a 1-0 lead in the second inning of game two on a solo homer by Sara Wennerstrand. The Gusties (11-9, 1-1) tied the game in the third on a throwing error by the Blazers, and the game stayed tied until the bottom of the fifth inning.

Wennerstrand singled to start the inning and advanced on a passed ball and Becky Gigstad doubled to put runners at second and third with one out. Seldon tripled to send in both runs, and she came around to score on a throwing error by the Gusties' second baseman to put CSB up 4-1.

Gustavus scored twice in the sixth thanks to a pair of RBI singles, but the Blazer defense shut the Gusties down in the seventh to hold on for the win.

Wennerstrand went 2-for-3 with an RBI to lead CSB and Seldon was 1-for-2 with two RBIs. The Blazers had four total hits. Seldon threw all seven innings and earned the win on the mound. She gave up three runs on nine hits and struck out four batters.

Gustavus took a 1-0 lead on the Blazers in the first inning of the first game and never looked back. The Gusties, who had 14 hits to CSB's four, added two runs in the third, three in the fourth and a single run in the fifth and seven innings.

Gigstad doubled for the Blazers, and three other players had a single hit. Cassie Meyer threw the first 3.2 innings and took the loss after giving up five runs on eight hits. Taylor Ellingson threw the final 3.1 innings and gave up three runs on six hits.

The Blazers are off until Tuesday, April 8, when they travel to Arden Hills to take on Bethel in a 3:30 p.m. doubleheader.
