Blazer softball splits on first day in Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. – The College of Saint Benedict softball team split a pair of games on the first day of its spring training trip Sunday in Clermont, Fla. The Blazers, who got to play outside for the first time Sunday morning, defeated John Caroll 8-4 in its first game of the day and then lost 8-5 to Augustana (Ill.) in the second game of the trip.

Saint Benedict (3-1) used a big first inning to snag an early lead against John Carroll. Kim Lidstone reached on an error, Megan Toninato walked and Sara Wennerstrand was hit by pitch to load the bases for Melissa Seldon, who was walked to send in a run. Taylor Ellingson had a two-run single and Emma Steck sent in a fourth run when she reached on an error to put CSB up 4-0 after one inning.

CSB pushed its lead to 7-0 in the fourth inning when Steck singled and scored when Nicole Nelson reached on an error, and Toninato hit a two-run triple to add to the Blazers' lead. The Blazers scored a single run in the fifth on an RBI groundout by Lidstone to make it 8-0. John Carroll scored four runs in the fifth thanks to a walk, a pair of singles, a two-run triple and a CSB error, but Kiela DeVleminck struck out four batters in the final two innings to end the game.

Ellingson pitched the first five innings and struck out five batters. She gave up six hits and four runs – but just one was earned. Five players had a single hit for CSB, and Toninato and Ellingson both finished with a pair of RBIs.

Augustana, which is currently 18th in Division III, scored a pair of runs in the second inning thanks to three runs, and added a single run in the third to make it 3-0. The Blazers made it a one-run game in the third thanks to a two-run single by Toninato, but the Vikings took advantage of a pair of Blazer errors and four hits to score five runs in the fourth inning to make it an 8-2 game.

Saint Benedict made up some ground when Lidstone scored on an error by the catcher in the fifth, and Ellingson had a two-run double in the sixth, but CSB couldn't get any closer.

Toninato went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs to lead CSB, which had five hits. Seldon threw the first four innings and gave up eight runs on eight hits with two strikeouts. Ellingson gave up a single hit and struck out two batters in the final three innings.

CSB is back in action Monday, March 2. The Blazers play Aurora University at 4 p.m. CDT and DeSales at 6 p.m. CDT in Clermont.
