ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict basketball team fell short in overtime, 58-53 Wednesday night to St. Olaf.
The game was tied at 52 after regulation, and
Emily Lueck hit a free throw to start the scoring in overtime, but that would be CSB's only point. Betsey Daly hit a pair of 3-pointers to lift the Oles to victory.
The Blazers now sit with an overall record of 10-10 and 7-6 in conference play. The Blazers will be looking to regain some momentum as they head to St. Paul on Saturday, Feb. 7, to face off against Bethel at 7 p.m.
After falling behind by a score of 8-0 early in the first half, the Blazers came back and responded with an 8-0 run to tie the game. From here, the two teams went back and forth for the remainder of the half, which included eight ties and five lead changes.
Mattie Lueck led the offense with 12 points and four assists and also added four rebounds.
Annie Dittberner and
Emily Lueck each added another six points as the Blazers finished the first half trailing by a score of 34-33.
In the second half, the Oles started out strong by going on a 7-2 run to take a 41-35 lead. After putting the score at 43-39, neither team scored for the next six-and-a-half minutes. From here, the Blazers took a 4-0 run to tie the score at 43-43.
The two teams continued to battle back and forth for the remainder of the game with neither team taking more than a four-point lead. Saint Benedict went up four, 51-47, on a pair of free throws by
Mattie Lueck, but Daly hit a three and to make it a one-point game, and Woo Bandel gave the Oles a 52-51 lead with a pair of free throws with 25 seconds left.
Mattie Lueck went to the line with four seconds left and hit the first of a pair of free throws to tie the game and send it into overtime.
Mattie Lueck finished the night with 22 points and 13 rebounds as
Emily Lueck added another 12 points and eight rebounds. They also each finished with five assists. The Blazers shot 28.3 percent from the field. After shooting 48 percent in the first half, they shot just 16 percent in the second half.
Daly led St. Olaf with 17 points and 11 rebounds and Afton Wolter finished with 15 points. The Oles shot 30.9 percent from the field. They had 45 rebounds and 12 turnovers.
