Blazers start MIAC play with win over Carleton

ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict basketball team is off to its best start in five years thanks to a big win over Carleton Wednesday night.

The Blazers started MIAC play with a 65-50 win over the Knights in Claire Lynch Hall. The victory pushes CSB's record to 5-1, marking its best start since 2010-11. That year, the Blazers won 15 of their first 16 games en route to a 20-7 overall record.

Saint Benedict, which shot 40 percent from long range, started Wednesday's game with a pair of threes from Annie Dittberner and another from Chelsey Guetter to go up 9-2. Macy Kelly converted a three-point play and Tyla Wilder hit the Blazers' fourth three of the game to put the Blazers up 17-7 after one quarter.

CSB stayed hot in the second quarter, and gave up just seven points to the Knights (2-4). The Blazers pushed their lead to 17 on a pair of free throws by Niki Fokken, and a layup by Wilder with 1:37 left in the first half made it a 20-point game, 32-12. The Blazers led 32-14 at halftime.

Saint Benedict pushed its lead to 23 early in the third quarter on another three by Dittberner. Carleton went on a short run and cut the gap to 13 on a three by Kayla Frank late in the third, but CSB still led 49-35 heading into the final quarter.

Ali Newton hit a three early in the fourth to push the Blazers' lead back to 18, and CSB was able to hold on for the win.

Dittberner and Grace Wolhowe both finished with 10 points to lead CSB, which shot 38.5 percent from the field. Guetter added nine points and seven rebounds, Newton finished with eight points and Fokken had eight points and a team-high nine rebounds. CSB made eight 3-pointers, went 7-for-14 from the line and outrebounded the Knights 42-31.

Nnenna Ezem led the Knights with 10 points and Anne Hamilton pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds. Carleton shot 37.3 percent from the field and went 8-for-10 from the line. The Knights committed 16 turnovers.
