CSB falls to Marian in season opener

FOND DU LAC, Wis. – The College of Saint Benedict hockey team held Marian University scoreless for two periods, but the Sabers came alive in the third period and scored five unanswered goals to pull away for a 5-1 win in the Blazers' season opener Friday in Fond du Lac, Wis.
 
Sophomore Kim Patterson scored CSB's first goal of the season and lone goal of the game just over two minutes into the second period to put the Blazers (0-1) up 1-0 over Marian (2-1), and the Saint Benedict defense and goalie Dory Johnson held the Sabers scoreless until early in the final period.
 
The Sabers tied the game 17 seconds into the third period on a goal by Courtney Wittig, and she scored again to give Marian a 2-1 lead at the 4:34 mark of the third period. Rian Lennon made it 3-1 in favor of Marian at 13:49, and Alexis Peterson scored 12 seconds later. Jill Schneider finished the scoring in the 17th minute of the final period.
 
Marian finished with 29 shots on net to CSB's eight. Siri Berg-Moberg had three shots on net to lead CSB. Johnson finished with seven saves for the Blazers.
 
Saint Benedict and Marian are back in action Saturday at 2 p.m. in Fond du Lac.
