CSB basketball wraps up busy stretch with games Monday, Tuesday

ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – After playing a pair of games over the weekend, the College of Saint Benedict basketball team is back on the court Monday and Tuesday playing its third and fourth games in the past five days.
 
The Blazers wrap up a busy early season stretch with a road game at Martin Luther Monday, Nov. 23, and a home game against UW-Superior Tuesday before heading into Thanksgiving break. Saint Benedict takes on Martin Luther at 7 p.m. Monday in New Ulm, Minn., and hosts Superior at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 24, in Claire Lynch.
 
About the Knights
Martin Luther is 1-2 overall heading into Monday night's nonconference game. The Knights to Gustavus and Calvin to start the season and picked up their first win of the year Saturday when they beat Finlandia 82-65. Erin Schmeling leads the team with 12 points per game and Moriah Hackbarth (11) is also in double digits. Jade St. Germaine leads MLC with 7.3 rebounds per game.
 
About UW-Superior
The Yellowjackets are 3-1 overall coming into Tuesday's game. Superior beat Concordia and Dubuque to start the year before losing by four points to UW-La Crosse. The Yellowjackets bounced back with a close win over UW-Eau Claire Saturday at Eau Claire's tip-off classic. Hailey Kontny leads the team with 15.7 points per game, Allie Nelson averages 12.7 points and Hadley Skalmoski averages 12.3 points and 5.3 rebounds per game for Superior.
 
CSB (2-1) picked up its first loss of the season Sunday when it fell 75-67 to Saint Mary's in a nonconference matchup in Claire Lynch. After three tight quarters, the Cardinals took advantage of free-throw opportunities and went 11-for-12 from the line in the final four minutes of the game to pull away. CSB beat UW-Stout and Crown to start the year.
 
First year Grace Wolhowe leads the team in scoring at 10.7 points per game and junior Annie Dittberner also averages double digits (10). Morgan Merritt is averaging 8.7 points per game after scoring 18 points against SMU, and sophomore Niki Fokken is averaging seven rebounds per game. CSB has three other players averaging at least eight points per game, and Kate Banovetz also averages six rebounds per game.
 
Tuesday's game against Superior starts a four-game home stretch for the Blazers. CSB opens MIAC play Dec. 2 at home against Carleton, and the Blazers also host St. Olaf (Dec. 5) and Hamline (Dec. 9) before the holiday break.
