ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict basketball team was poised to win its fourth straight home game Saturday afternoon against Gustavus Adolphus, but a blocked 3-pointer in the final 10 seconds of the game ended those hopes for the Blazers.
The Blazers held 52-50 lead with less than a minute to play, but Kelsey Carpenter hit a three for the Gusties and Mikayla Miller hit a pair of free throws with 21 seconds left to put Gustavus up 55-52.
Annie Dittberner put up a 3-pointer with 10 seconds left, but it was blocked by Carpenter and Miller grabbed the rebound to allow the Gusties to hold on for the 55-52 win.
Saint Benedict is now 7-8 overall and in a four-way tie for fifth in the MIAC with a 4-4 conference mark. Gustavus improved to 12-3 overall and 6-2 in the league. The loss marked the second straight for CSB.
After falling behind by a score of 23-12 early in the game, the Blazers fought back with a 10-3 run and finished the first half with a buzzer-beater by
Kate Banovetz to tie the game at 26-26. From here, the two teams battled back and forth for the remainder of the game with six lead changes until the Gusties eventually came out on top as time expired.
Mattie Lueck led the Blazer offense with 16 points and Dittberner added another 10 points. Lueck also racked up five rebounds, three steals and three blocks.
Tyla Wilder also finished the night with five rebounds and nine points.
The Blazers will move on to face Macalester at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 21 in St. Paul. They will be looking to regain their momentum as they head into a tough stretch of games in the next week.
