CSB headed to Oshkosh tournament

Blazer volleyball heads to UW-Oshkosh tournament

ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict volleyball team heads to Wisconsin looking to get a few more wins under its belt this weekend. The Blazers are in Oshkosh, Wis., Friday and Saturday for the UW-Oshkosh Pizza Hut Classic. This marks the second tournament of the year for the No. 14 Blazers, who played four games at their own Labor Day Tournament before playing a single nonconference game against St. Scholastica for their 3-2 overall record so far this season.
 
About the UW-Oshkosh Classic: The Blazers play two games Friday afternoon and two more Saturday morning in Wisconsin. CSB starts the tournament at 3:30 p.m. Friday against Dominican (Ill.). The Stars are 3-3 and are on a three-game losing streak heading into the tournament. Friday night, the Blazers take on UW-Superior. The Yellow Jackets are 6-4 overall, and their last win also came against St. Scholastica. Saint Ben's starts the day Saturday at 10 a.m. against Concordia Wisconsin, which is a perfect 5-0 heading into the tournament. The Blazers wrap up the weekend at noon against Maranatha Baptist, which is also undefeated (8-0) heading into the tournament.
 
The Storyline: CSB is 3-2 heading into the tournament and is looking to gain some momentum heading into the MIAC season, which starts Wednesday. The Blazers are ranked No. 14 in the nation, the highest national ranking in the MIAC. Head coach Nicole Hess, in her fifth season, is five wins away from the 100-win mark at Saint Ben's. She is currently 95-37 at CSB. She recorded the 150th overall win of her career last season.
 
Who to Watch: Junior hitter Laura Schmitt leads the team and is 13th in the MIAC with 65 total kills. She is fourth in the conference with an average 3.42 kills per set. She also has 64 digs. Senior setter Taya Kockelman leads the team and is second in the conference with 10.68 assists per set. She is third in the conference with 203 total assists. Senior Victoria Nass leads the team and is fourth in the MIAC with 5.42 digs per set, and has 103 total digs. Fellow senior Kelly Davenport is third on the team with 54 digs.

Last Time Out: The Blazers went 2-2 at their home tournament in late August, and last week they swept St. Scholastic 3-0 in Duluth, Minn. Schmitt had 12 digs and 11 kills, Lexi Rinde had 11 kills and Kockelman had 36 assists.
