Emily Engelmeier

Clermont, Fla. – Behind a pair of strong performances in the circle, the Saint Benedict softball team earned the first sweep of its spring break trip, winning 7-3 over John Carroll (Ohio) and 4-0 over Immaculata.

The win over JCU was a little bit of revenge for the Blazers, as the Blue Streaks took down CSB in eight innings on Sunday.

"Multiple hitters stepped up and we had some big hits in very clutch situations," head coach Rachael Click said. "We did the little things right in game one and beat a very good team."

Rachel Nelson (Lindstrom, Minn.) went the distance in the win, facing just four over the minimum without a walk while striking out six.

Then in the second game of the day, Emily Engelmeier (South St. Paul, Minn.) threw a complete game shutout, allowing just three hits with eight strikeouts, while also not surrendering a walk.

The Blazers never trailed on the day, jumping out to a 4-0 lead on JCU, before the Blue Streaks got back within one in the fifth. Then in the sixth on the strength of bases-clearing double from Stacy Svihel (Cold Spring, Minn.), CSB added three more on its way to the win.

In the second game the Blazers did all their damage by the fourth inning, and then turned it over to Engelmeier as she closed out her first shutout of the season, allowing just one runner all day past second base.

The Blazers will have the day off tomorrow, but will close out their week in Florida with three straight days of doubleheaders on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
