ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Sophomore forward
Stephanie Kirk had a goal and an assist, but the College of Saint Benedict hockey team lost Saturday night, falling 5-2 to the Auggies of Augsburg College.
After coming from behind to beat the Auggies Friday night in Minneapolis, the Blazers got out ahead early Saturday, scoring just 58 seconds into the game. First-year forward
Brigette Miller scored her second goal of the year, coming off an assist from Kirk.
The Auggies, who were in second place in the MIAC coming in to this weekend, skated back to even the score 11 minutes later when Auggie forward Kayla Fuechtmann scored off a rebound to tie the score at 1-1.
The story of the game was a second period in which the Auggies scored four goals, including two from first-year forward Megan Robertson. Kirk added the lone goal in the period for the Blazers, scoring off an assist from sophomore forward
Elli Marvin.
With a minute left in that period, the Blazers were trailing 4-2, but were on the power play and appeared poised to narrow the deficit to one goal heading into the second intermission. They ripped off five straight shots in the final minute, all saved by Augsburg goalie Rebecca Sonnek.
The Auggies' Fuechtmann grabbed the rebound off the final shot from the Blazers and skated the other way, passing to Robertson who scored for the Auggies as time ran out. That goal put the Auggies up 5-2 and ended up being the nail in the coffin, as neither team scored in the third period.
The silver lining to the loss was that the Blazers rifled off 36 shots to Augsburg's 24, the second-most shots the Auggie defense has given up this year, and won 29 of 48 face-offs (60.4 percent).
Jenna Traut made 19 saves in goal for CSB.
The Blazers will take a break for finals and then hop a plane to play against teams in Switzerland, Germany, Italy and Austria.
The next home game for the Blazers will be January 16 against the Concordia-Moorhead Cobbers. Face-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
