St. Paul, Minn. – The Saint Benedict hockey team dropped a 4-0 decision to St. Catherine today (Jan. 25), and were done in by the Wildcat power play, as they opened game with three straight with the extra skater..

With the win, St. Kate's (9-6-1, 6-3-1 MIAC) closes out the weekend sweep, and sends the Blazers to their sixth straight loss.

The Wildcats took a 1-0 lead after the first, scoring on the power play just before the midway point for the early advantage.

The second period, though, was the dagger for the Blazers (4-13-0, 1-9-0 MIAC). The Wildcat power play came back to haunt them as they rolled up two more with the advantage, before adding a third in the period for a 4-0 lead heading into the final intermission.

Just 2:15 into the second – and just 10 seconds into the power play – the Wildcats went up 2-0, before adding another just five minutes later. The Wildcats third goal, though, came after using almost all of the advantage, as the Blazers nearly killed it off. But with 22 seconds left, the Wildcats punched it in and were in control 3-0.

The Blazers finished the day even with the Wildcats in shots, with each taking 25 in the game. Christine Brodersen and Eli Marvin each led individually with five each.

The two teams came out firing in the first, combining for 22 shots, with the Wildcats holding the slight edge 12-to-10. In the second, it was the Blazers with the edge, 11-to-8 in shots, but the effort wasn't enough to overcome the strength of the Wildcat power pay.

In the net, Kaitlyn Rolando got the start, and finished with 21 saves, while her counterpart for St. Kate's stopped all 25 shots she saw for the shutout.

The Blazers are back on the road next Friday, heading to defending champions Gustavus for a 5 p.m. match-up on Jan. 31. Then a day later the final month of the season kicks off with the Gusties visiting the Blazers at 2 p.m.
