Swim and Dive Tops Carleton

The Blazers scored wins in nine events

Northfield, Minn. – The Saint Benedict swimming and used wins in nine events to score a 169-127 win over Carleton on Saturday (Jan. 11).
 
In their first meet back since the winter training trip, the Blazers showed little rust, beating Carleton for the second straight season.
 
"Great team win today," head coach Dan Eckberg said. "It took everyone swimming and diving to their best ability to get the job done. I'm very proud of how hard we worked and how hard we cheered today."
 
They Blazers opened the meet with a win in the 200 medley relay, touching the wall in 1:53.93 to win by over three seconds. Emily Roberts (Eden Prairie, Minn.), Victoria Tormanen (Dassell, Minn.), Laura Peterson (Plymouth, Minn.) and Meghan Harder (Colorado Springs, Colo.) teamed up for the win.
 
Tormanen then scored a pair of individual wins to add to her day. She took the top spot in the 100 breast with a winning time of 1:10.02, blasting the field by over four seconds. Then in the 200 breast she finished in 2:37.15, just beating teammate Maria Gathje (Bloomington, Minn.) in second with a 2:39.21.
 
Ellen Dean (Bothell, Wash.) added a win in the 200 fly, stopping the clock in 2:21.82, while Peterson made it two Blazers at the top with her second place time of 2:23.64. Then in the 100 fly, the two flipped, with Peterson taking the win at 1:03.21, and Dean coming in second, right behind with a 1:03.57.
 
On the one-meter board, it was another Blazer sweep of the top two spots, as Megan Lawson (Rochester, Minn.) scored the win with a 2:17.25 and Carissa Gaffy (Sauk Rapids, Minn.) came in second with a 195.65. Gaffy then added a win of her own before the day was over, scoring a 193.85 on the three-meter.
 
In the 500 free, Katie Schmitz (Elk River, Minn.) was the Blazers final individual winner, with her 5:33.57.
 
In closing out the day, the Blazers bookended the meet with another relay win, as Roberts, Abbie Gerdes (Moorhead, Minn.), Harder and Stephanie Bierman (Apple Valley, Minn.) teamed up for a 1:42.43 to take the top spot in the 200 free relay.
 
The Blazers return to action on Jan. 17 when they travel to St. Cloud State for a 5 p.m. dual meet. Then on Jan. 18, they are in St. Paul for the Meet of the Saints at 9 a.m.
