Spokane, Wash. - The Saint Benedict volleyball team opened today (Sept. 7) with a 3-0 win over Whitman, and closed it with its second sweep of host Whitworth in as many days, taking home the title of Whit Classic Champions.

In the morning, The No. 19 ranked Blazers beat Whitman 25-16, 26-24 and 25-12 to go to 3-0 on the weekend and earn a spot in the championship match. Their opponent, Whitworth, had their only loss come from the Blazers, setting up the rematch in the championship game.

Taya Kockelman was named Tournament MVP, while teammates Mary Franz and Lexi Rinde were each named to the All-Tournament Team.

Kockelman finished with over 120 assists in the four games, including 34 and 32 respectively in the two games today. She had now gone over the 30 assist mark in all but one match this season.

Franz went off for a career high 12 kills in the first match of the day, while Rinde closed the day as the team leader with 19 combined kills, including 12 in the championship game against Whitworth. In three of the four games on the weekend, she hit better than .350 with over 10 kills.

The Blazers have now won 27 consecutive sets in their 9-0 start, and went largely unchallenged in getting that ninth win.

Whitworth hit just .054 for the match, which included marks of .000 in both the second and third sets. Five times now this season, the Blazers have held their opponents to an attack percentage under .100, including each of the last three games.

One of those times also included the day's first game, where the Blazers held Whitman to a mark of .074. Whitman, however, did post a .211 mark in the second set, where they pushed the Blazers to the brink in the 26-24 set, as they got 12 kills against just four errors.

The Blazers need an 8-to-2 run late in the match to get the score even at 24-all, before eventually winning the set. They went on to finish with 47 kills against Whitman, the Blazers', best mark of the tournament and second best mark of the season, behind only the 48 they tallied against Northwestern in the second match of the year.

And they'll meet Northwestern again, as the Blazers return to the court on Wednesday on the road to take on Eagles in St. Paul, Minn. in a 7 p.m. match-up. The Blazers then return home on Saturday (Sept. 14) to host St. Scholastica in a 3 p.m. match.
