St. Peter, Minn. - The Saint Benedict soccer team defended their No. 21 national ranking today with a 2-0 shutout victory over the Gustavus Adolphus Gusties. The win is the seventh straight for the Blazers, boosting their record to 7-0-1 (3-0-0 MIAC). With the loss the Gusties fall to 4-4-0 (0-3-0 MIAC). Their seven-game win-streak is the Blazers' longest since they won 12 straight to begin the 2007 season. The Blazers gained three more points in the conference standings and move into a four-way tie for first place with the conference's other 3-0 teams in MIAC play (Augsburg, Carleton, Concordia).
Â
The Blazers were itching to score early in the first half, but were held scoreless on their first five first-half corner kicks. Finally on their sixth corner kick of the half sophomore forward Grace Vaughan was able to get a head on the cross from senior defender
Kristina Burk and redirect it past Gustie keeper Caroline Olson to put the Blazers up 1-0. The goal is Vaughan's fifth goal in as many games and ties her for fifth among the MIAC leaders in goals scored.
Â
Mid-way through the second period, senior forward
Colleen Bouchard added an insurance goal for the Blazers, scoring unassisted to give the Blazers a two-goal lead. The goal is Bouchard's fourth of the season, and vaults her into fifth in the MIAC with her thirteenth and fourteenth points. The goal also marks her seventh game with a point recorded in the Blazers eight games this season.
Â
First-year keeper Heather Kaluzniak and the Blazer back line had another impressive afternoon defending the net. The shutout is the fourth of the year and second straight for Kaluzniak, who needed to make only three saves on the day. Those three saves however will allow her to maintain her reign as MIAC leader in save percentage (.884) and moves her into second place in the conference in goals against average (0.67). The Blazers have not allowed a goal in their past 195 minutes of game time.
Â
The Blazers will return to St. Joseph this Wednesday to match up against the Macalester Scots. Kickoff is scheduled for 4pm.
