Clermont, Fla. –The Saint Benedict softball posted a sweep in its two games today (Mar. 23), opening up for a 12-4 win over Southern Maine in the first game, before capping the day with a 4-3 win over Oneonta State in the opening day of the National Training Center Spring Games.

Rachel Nelson and Emily Engelmeier each picked up their second wins of the season, pitching the first and second game respectively. Each went the distance to move to 2-1 on the year.

Despite the lopsided score the Blazers actually came from behind in their game one win, overcoming a 3-2 deficit after the first inning. The Blazers opened the scoring with two in the top of the first but the Huskies came right back with three in the bottom of the inning to take the lead.

The Blazers went back ahead for good with two more runs in the third, and eventually blew the game open in the sixth on the way to their highest scoring game of the season.

Kim Lidstone and Sarah Walch each finished the game with two hits, while Lidstone added three runs scored and a double on the day.

The offense was tougher to come by in the second game, but the Blazers again had to overcome an early deficit. The Red Dragons scored one in the top of the first to go ahead, and after the Blazers got two back in the bottom of the inning, the Red Dragons came right back with one more to tie the game at 2-2.

The Blazers then went up 3-2 in the bottom of the second and never trailed again, eventually extending the lead to 4-2 before Oneonta State scored a harmless run in the seventh.

Lexi Alm led the way with two runs scored, and the Blazer base runners combined to steal six bases in the game, continually catching the Red Dragon defense sleeping.

With the two wins the Blazers improve to 4-2 on the season, and have won their last four games after opening the season with two losses. They'll look to extend the streak tomorrow when they play two more, taking on Wisconsin-Whitewater at 8 a.m., and Western Connecticut State at 10 a.m.
