Blaine, Minn. – Round two of the two-game series between the College of Saint Benedict and Bethel University women's hockey teams took place today (Feb. 16) at Bethel's home ice, with the Royals scoring a 6-1 victory.

The Blazers (5-11-4, 3-11-2 MIAC) have been able to score first in each of their last three games, but couldn't today, and it hurt them.

Bethel scored the first four goals of the game, three of which took place in the first 20 minutes. Melanie Robertson, Cristina Masten, and Caroline Kivisto all scored in the 14-shot first period for the Royals (13-8-2, 10-4-2 MIAC). Conversely, the Blazers only got off just five shots the period and trailed 3-0 going into the second.

In the second, the Blazers outshot the Royals 9-to-7 but neither team could put one in the net. Then, just 1:14 into the third Sarah Kartak scored for the Royals but the Blazers quickly returned the favor with a goal of their own off the stick of senior defender, Mara Kohl. This, however, proved to be the only offensive firepower for the Blazers.

Cristina Masten – who had already scored and assisted earlier – scored again later in the third period, adding the Royals fifth goal on a short handed tally. Before the period would end, they added a sixth, handing the Blazers their most lopsided loss of the season.

Unlike game one of the series where only one penalty was called, today's installment featured five penalties. The Blazers were called for three penalties totaling six minutes whereas the Royals were called twice for four minutes.

In the net, Jenna Traut allowed six goals on 28 shots giving her 22 saves on the day. Jess Newstrom who tended the goal today for the Royals instead of last night's starter Erika Alle, stopped 17 of 18 shots.

The Blazers will look to take on the MIAC leaders, Gustavus Adolphus College, in their final series of the season next weekend. They will next play at 7:30 on Feb. 22nd at home at the Municipal Athletic Complex (MAC) in St. Cloud, Minn.
