St. Paul, Minn. - The Saint Benedict soccer team dropped its second game of the season today (Oct. 15), losing 2-1 against St. Thomas in a backdrop of cold and rain.
Â
With the loss the Blazers fall to 9-2-1 (4-2-0 MIAC) on the season and remain in second place in the conference standings. The Tommies improve to 7-6-0 (4-3-0 MIAC) and move into a four-way tie for fourth place.
Â
Senior forward Katy Scherer got the scoring started early for the Tommies, scoring off a pass from senior forward Nicole Sheehan in the game's 16th minute. The Blazers were overpowered by the fast-firing Tommies over the rest of the half, being outshot 7 to 2 over the period. Despite being outshot, they were able to keep the Tommies out of the net the rest of the way, and went into the half down one goal.
Â
The Blazers came out strong to begin the second half, but, unfortunately luck was not on their side. Half-way through the second the Tommies struck again, this time by way of a chip shot from senior defender Stephanie McCartan that sailed over the outstretched hands of first-year keeper Heather Kaluzniak (Plymouth, Minn.). The goal was assisted by junior midfielder Taylor Sabrowski and put the Blazers in a tough 2-0 hole with 25 minutes to play.
Â
With time waning out, senior forward
Colleen Bouchard (Cedar Rapids, Minn.) gave the Blazers an 85th-minute goal off a free kick to pull the Blazers within one. The goal was Bouchard's sixth of the year and increased her season point total to 20, the third-best mark in the MIAC, hitting the 20-mark for the third straight season.
Â
The Blazers rushed forward their attack in the final minutes, forcing Tommie keeper Jenny Grahek to make several tough saves to keep her team on top. Unfortunately the comeback proved to be too little too late as time ran out on the Blazers, dropping the game 2-1.
Â
The Blazers will have their first chance to rebound from the loss this Saturday when they will return to St. Joseph, Minn. and host the third-place Augsburg Auggies in another MIAC matchup. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.Â
