Blazers Battle With Huskies

The Blazer swimming and diving team posted two wins and many quality times as they hosted St. Cloud State.

Collegeville, Minn. - After a strong finish at the Jean Freeman Invite last week, Saint Benedict came out swimming hard tonight (Dec. 7) against St. Cloud State, but came up short, losing by a score of 125-95.

In the first event of the night, the 200-yard medley relay, the Blazers A team finished second with a score of 1:53.71 to score four points. The relay team consisted of Emily Roberts, Ellen Dean, Victoria Tormanen and Stephanie Bierman.

In the 200-yard freestyle, the Huskies ran away with first place, but Blazer swimmers finished second, third and fourth, led by Mary Wood who finished second with a time of 2:03.49. Hailey Schweitz grabbed the close third at 2:03.93 and Hannah Iverson finished fourth with a time of 2:05.52. The three combined to score nine points for the Blazers.

In the next event, the 200-yard IM, the Blazer's Kate Kaiser added another two points in fourth place with a mark of 2:22.51. Lauren Kessler also added another point with the fifth place finish with a time of 2:24.05.

The 50-yard freestyle was next, where the Blazers finished in second and third place. Bierman finished second to add four points to her team with a time of 25.13. Brita Skalbeck came in a close third at 25.25 to add three more points.

The Blazers finished in first place in the 200-yard butterfly, one of two individual first place finishes of the night. Dean took the nine points with a 2:15.59 finish.

After that, the Blazers went to take second and third place in the 100-yard freestyle. Bierman finished with a time of 54.53 to gain four more points and Schweitz followed her for the third place finish at 57.10 and three more points.

The Blazers then went on to take second and fourth place in the 200-yard backstroke. Roberts took the second place prize with a 2:15.12 finish and another four points for her team. Skalbeck also added another two points for her team as she locked down the fourth place spot at 2:19.19.

In the next event, the 500-yard freestyle, the Blazers took all of the top three spots. Lauren Kessler led the way in first place with a time of 5:33.76. In second place, Iverson finished with a time of 5:41.05, and Briana Daniels took the close third place finish at 5:42.93.

The Blazers locked down second and third place once again in the 200-yard breaststroke with Tormanen taking the second place spot and four more points, with a time of 2:30.94. Maria Gathje locked up third place at 2:40.11.

In the final event of the night, the Blazers' A team took first place in the 200-yard freestyle relay.  The team consisted of Skalbeck, Schweitz, Roberts and Bierman, and touched the wall in 1:40.46.

On the boards, the Blazers had a pair of season bests on the one-meter, as Abby Lundeen and Kristie Albrecht each posted the best marks of their careers.

The Blazers will now head to St. Thomas to take on their MIAC rival in the final meet of the first half of the season. The Blazers and Tommies square off at 1 p.m. on Dec. 15.
