St. Paul, Minn. – The Saint Benedict basketball team held off a late charge by Macalester tonight (Dec. 5) to win its second straight 57-47.
Trailing by as much as 10 with 7:43 to go in the second half, the Scots (3-4, 2-2 MIAC) closed the gap to four on a three-point play with just 4:50 remaining. A
Brianna Barrett three-pointer on the next trip down the floor put the Blazers up seven, but the Scots weren't done as they got back within four with just 2:18 left.
The only the three of the night for Barrett, it came at the perfect time, as she led the Blazers in scoring for the third straight game and finished with a game and career high 20 points. Hitting the 20-mark for the first time, she has set a new career high for the third time in the last five games, while leading the Blazers in scoring in each of the last three.
After their lead was trimmed to four with just over two minutes left, the Blazers (5-2, 3-1 MIAC) responded with six straight points to go up 53-45, capped by a pair of Barrett free throws.
Forced to foul in the final minute, the Scots sent the Blazers to the line where seniors
Whitney Canton and
Jamie Wollin combined to go 4-of-6 down the stretch to lock up the win. Canton finished with nine points on the night, with each of them coming off a 9-of-12 performance at the charity stripe.
Despite making a season low 18 field goals on the night, and being held a season low 57 points, the Blazers made up the difference by limiting the Scots to just 33% shooting from the floor, a season low for Blazer opponents. They also forced 13 Macalester turnovers, turning them into 13 points.
Adding to the defensive effort, the Blazers pulled down 43 rebounds on the night, while adding seven blocks, each their second best tallies of the season.
The Blazers will now return home to host Saint Mary's at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday (Dec. 8) in their final home game before the semester break. They will then wrap up the first half of the season with a road trip to Augsburg on Dec. 12.
