St. Joseph, Minn. – The Saint Benedict soccer team got just enough today (Oct. 6), scoring a 2-1 win over St. Catherine on Blazer Field.
The Blazers (5-4-2, 4-3-0 MIAC) led 1-0 at the break and went out to a 2-0 lead late in the second, eventually holding on for the win as the Wildcats (7-5-0, 2-4-0 MIAC) got one back with less than five minutes left in the game.
The Blazers finished with eight total shots in the game, and controlled the play for much of the 90 minutes. They were able to capitalize on their opportunities, putting two of their three shots on goal into the back of the net.
Although the first half stats show four shots for each team, the ball spent the majority of its time with the Blazer attack in the Wildcat zone.
Megan Lenz put CSB on the board first with her first career goal, taking a shot from about 18 yards out. Standing out deep to the keeper's left side, she rifled a shot into the top of the goal for the 1-0 lead at the 27:56 mark. She was assisted by
Colleen Bouchard who notched her seventh helper of the season, tying her career high set last season.
The score would hold there through the half and through the first 30 minutes of the second, until Bouchard scored a goal of her own after a nifty move through the back line. A misplaced Wildcat goal kick was picked off by Alyssa Hoffman who fed Bouchard for the finish. Bouchard then dribbled past one defender and went to the far post past the diving St. Kate's keeper at the 76:09 mark.
With time winding down, the Blazers appeared to have the game in hand, holding their 2-0 lead in the final minutes. The Wildcats had other ideas, though, and at the 86:05 mark, Chritiana Paik found an opening for her sixth of the season. The Blazers collected themselves, however, and held the Wildcats without a shot for the rest of the game in locking up the win.
The current crop of Blazer seniors collects their fourth win in as many tries against the Wildcats, finished their career's unbeaten against St. Kate's. The victory also moves the Blazers into sole possession of third place in the MIAC standings, sitting just a single point behind second place Bethel.
And when the Blazers continue their home stretch next Tuesday, they will be hosting those Bethel Royals in yet another important MIAC match-up. The match kicks off 4 p.m., Oct. 9 on Blazer Field.
