Moorhead, Minn. – There was neither trick nor treat for the Saint Benedict soccer team today (Oct. 31), as they lost a 1-0 decision to No. 15 Concordia in the MIAC Tournament semifinals.

Entering as the fourth seed, the Blazers were tasked with taking on the No. 1 seed and regular season champion Cobbers, a team they just played into double overtime four days ago. There would be no extra session today, though, as Concordia (15-3-1) got a fortunate bounce early and held on for 1-0 win after 90 minutes.

"We knew it was going to be a close game, which is saying something," head coach Steve Kimble said. "We knew it was going to be a one-goal game with a nationally ranked team, so it says something about us. But Concordia, with Ali Nelson in net, is great. She's solid, hard to beat. They've got some good players on the field, so, tough match. Today they're the better team."

In the 14th minute, the Cobbers' Libby Fransdal line up a free kick about 45 yards out. Her serve into the box fell between the waiting players and bounced high towards the goal.  Saint Benedict (7-6-4) goalkeeper Megan Favorite went out to play the ball, but couldn't get a good grip on it as it went over her outstretched arms on the bounce and into the net for the game's only goal.

The Cobbers kept the pressure on in the first half, out-shooting the Blazers 9-to-0 in the period. Favorite regrouped to keep the game at just 1-0, stopping the other four shots she saw. She went on to finish with six total saves in the match, adding a pair of key stops in the second.

Any good run the Blazers had was thwarted by the Cobber backline before a shot could develop. After going down 1-0, Alyssa Hoffman took control of a ball in Blazer territory, and carried it up the sideline into the 18-yard box with Colleen Bouchard shadowing her the whole way. But before Hoffman could send in the crosser, the Cobbers had the ball knocked away, ending the threat.

With five minutes left in the half, Peggy Renier sent a pass into Bouchard on the left side of the net, but the serve was just a step too far ahead, and Bouchard could not get to it before the keeper.

As the Blazers came out of the break, they came out with every bit of intensity a team facing the final 45 minutes of it season should have. They took control of the match and fired off eight shots in the period, while holding the Cobbers to just three.

"We never quit, we know we get stronger in the second half, so we play the full 90," Kimble said. "A slow start for us, and it's hard to play catch-up against a good team like Concordia, But I'm pound of my team the way they did battle back. They gave a good effort, we had chances."

Some of their best chances came late in the half, as the Blazers went into full do-or-die mode. With time winding down, head coach Steve Kimble pulled Ellie Mullen up from the backline to add another forward, and it nearly paid off.

With nine minutes left, Mullen had a near point-blank attempt saved that would have tied the game. Left alone on the right side her shot was too on the mark and fell right into the hands of the keeper.

That wasn't the only bring-the-fans-to-their-seat moment, as just minutes earlier Alli O'Brien took a pass front and center, but her turn-around shot also came up empty as Cobber goalkeeper Ali Nelson came up big again.

Nelson went on to finish with three saves in the match, all coming in the second half.

The loss ends the Blazers season, while the 15th ranked Cobbers will now advance to the MIAC Championship game where they will host Augsburg, with the winner earning a trip to the NCAA Tournament.
