Blazers Start Season with 4-2 Victory

Box Score

The College of Saint Benedict hockey team (1-0 overall, 0-0 MIAC)  capitalized on penalties and scored three out of their four goals on power plays during a 4-2 victory over Marian University (0-1 overall).

Marian University led the game only once after a late first period goal by Amanda Waigens. She also scored the Sabres only other goal late in the second period to tie the game 2-2.

The Blazers were able to take advantage of five power plays during the game and score on three of them. Senior forward Amie Ernst was the first one to find the net with a power play goal early in the second period tying the game at one goal apiece. Geier was assisted by Ashley Olson and Megan Schwegman. To put the Blazers up 2-1 Brenna Gould was able to score later on in the second. Waigens second goal to tie the game came not long after to end the second period 2-2.

The game came down to the wire as the Blazers were able to tack on two goals in the last three minutes of the game to seal the victory. Kelly Fladebo's 5 on 3 power play goal gave the Blazers their 3-2 lead and Megan Brettingen scored on the final power play with 55 seconds left in the game to end up 4-2.

Although a great way to start the season, the Blazers do not have long to celebrate the victory as their next test is at 2 p.m. against Saint Norberts (0-0 overall) in De Pere, Wis. on October 30.
