Blazer Basketball Loses Close Game to Bethel 52-48

The College of Saint Benedict basketball team (16-3 overall, 13-3 MIAC) lost a tough game to Bethel 52-48 this evening in Claire Lynch Hall.

The two teams played nearly identical halves of basketball in the first 20 minutes of the game. There were seven lead changes over the course of the half, with neither team leading by more than four points with Bethel led 4-0 at the start of the half. CSB was able to move ahead by three points at 15-12 and 17-14 before the half finished with the score tied at 19. Both teams struggled from the field with CSB shooting 28% and Bethel shooting 31%. The Blazers had seven turnovers and five steals while the Royals managed six turnovers and three steals.
CSB started the second half with a 9-2 run to lead 28-21 with 15 minutes left on the clock. Six minutes later, the Blazers were still ahead by seven with a 36-29 score. The Royals managed to tie the score at 39 with 5:30 left on the clock. Two minutes later, Bethel had taken over the lead 44-40 and kept that lead for the rest of the game. Though CSB pulled the score within three points at 51-48, the Blazers couldn't come ahead, losing 52-48.
Leading the Blazers in scoring was senior post Heather Gillund (Ham Lake, MN, Blaine) who contributed 19 points off of 6-for-10 from the field, while also adding eight rebounds and four blocks. Senior wing Amy Stifter (Watertown, MN, Watertown-Mayer) totaled seven points. The Royals were led by Scottie Moats with 21 points.
Up next for CSB is a road trip to Carleton on Wed., Feb. 2 at 7:30 p.m.
