The College of Saint Benedict basketball team (15-2 overall, 12-2 MIAC) suffered a 77-58 loss to Hamline University this evening.
The first 13 minutes of the half consisted of 14 lead changes, with neither team leading by more than four points. At the seven-minute mark, the Pipers were ahead 24-23 and though they extended the lead to 27-23, the Blazers were able to tie the score at 27 with five minutes to go. Hamline wouldn't give up its lead, pulling ahead on an 11-3 run to head into the locker room with a 38-30 lead over CSB.
The Blazers couldn't battle back as the Pipers jumped ahead by 15 points at a 47-32 score with 15 minutes left on the clock. CSB was able to cut that lead down to 11, but continued to struggle as Hamline continued to push ahead. The highest Piper lead was 22 points at 77-55 with 2:30 remaining, but a quick three-pointer cut the Blazer deficit to 19 points with a final score of 77-58.
CSB was led by senior wing Amy Stifter (Watertown, MN, Watertown-Mayer) who contributed 15 points and 10 rebounds while senior post Heather Gillund (Ham Lake, MN, Blaine) added 14 points. Senior forward Laura Canton (Pine Island, MN, Pine Island) also had 10 points. Leading the Pipers was Mary Wilkowski with 14 points.
Up next for the Blazers is a trip to Northfield, MN where they take on St. Olaf on Sat., Jan. 29 at 1 p.m. CSB is at home again on Mon., Jan. 31 against Bethel at 7:30 p.m.
