Blazer Basketball Breezes Past St. Catherine 90-50

The College of Saint Benedict basketball team (14-1 overall, 11-1 MIAC) cruised past St. Catherine 90-50 in tonight's home basketball game.

The Blazers started the first half on a roll, putting together 11-4 and 5-2 runs to lead 16-6 in the first seven minutes of play.  Senior wing Amy Stifter (Watertown, MN, Watertown-Mayer) scored 14 of her team's first 16 points, including three three-pointers.  CSB continued to extend its distance from St. Catherine, leading by as much as 23 points at 39-16 with 50 seconds left on the clock.  The Blazers went on to make 6-of-12 three-pointers over the course of the half to lead 39-19 heading into the locker room.

Play started with a 13-6 run by the Blazers in the first 2:30 of the half to lead 52-25.  CSB continued to extend its lead, pulling ahead by 32 points at 69-37 with 11 minutes left on the clock.  That lead kept growing to 37 points at 81-44 with 5:30 remaining, finishing with a 40-point Blazer win at 90-50.  CSB dominated the second half, shooting an impressive 62% from the field, including 70% from beyond the arc. 

Sixteen Blazers scored in tonight's game, led by Stifter with 17 points.  Senior wing Abby Richardson also contributed 13 points, 10 of which came in the second half.  Senior post Heather Gillund added 10 points.

CSB next plays host to St. Thomas on Sat., Jan. 22 at 3 p.m. in Claire Lynch Hall.
