Stifter Shines as Blazers Come Out on Top Over Gustavus 64-61

The College of Saint Benedict basketball team (7-1 overall, 4-1 MIAC) finished the 2010 portion of the season on a three-game winning streak after defeating Gustavus 64-61.

The Gusties started out with an 8-2 lead over the Blazers, the Blazers came back with a 10-2 run to take the lead back 12-10 with 14 minutes remaining.  Over the next five minutes, there were three tied scores, but CSB still lead 19-18 with nine minutes left on the clock.  The Blazers strung together a 12-3 run to extend its lead to 10 at 31-21, heading into the locker room at halftime with a score of 31-24.

Gustavus slowly chipped away at CSB's lead, eventually taking control with a 45-43 Gustie lead with 10 minutes left on the clock.  Gustavus was able to extend its lead by as much as six, but the Blazers never backed down, tying the score at 56 and 58 before taking the lead 59-58 with four minutes remaining.  Though the Gusties tied the score again at 61, the Blazers prevailed, winning 64-61.

Freethrows saved CSB in the second half, sinking 14-of-15.  They shot an overall 90% freethrow percentage.

Senior wing Amy Stifter (Watertown, MN, Watertown-Mayer) had a stellar game for the Blazers, scoring 24 points, including four three-pointers and 8-for-8 from the freethrow line.  Senior post Heather Gillund (Ham Lake, MN, Blaine) added 10 points, pulled down five rebounds and totalled five blocks.  The Gusties were led by Molly Mathiowetz who had 17 points and pulled down eight rebounds.

The Blazers take a break for the holidays before returning to Claire Lynch Hall on Mon., Jan. 3 to take on Carleton at 7:30 p.m.
