Blazer Volleyball Lose Tough Match to St. Thomas 3-1

The College of Saint Benedict volleyball team (17-10 overall, 6-4 MIAC) came up short against the University of St. Thomas with a final score of 3-1 in the Blazers' last regular season home match.

The first set started off tight with a tied score at six  The teams exchanged point for point until the score was again tied at 11.  Here, the Tommies strung together an 11-2 run for a score of 22-13.  Though the Blazers fought back, they couldn't make up the distance as UST went on to win 25-19.

The Tommies started the second set with a 13-6 lead over CSB.  The Blazers were able to bring the score within four at score of 20-16, 22-18 and finally 24-20, but couldn't come any closer as UST won 25-20.

CSB wasn't about to get swept by the UST as the Blazers jumped to a 7-2 lead right off the bat.  The Tommies managed to put together a 6-1 run to tie the score at eight, but they couldn't move ahead.  CSB strung together a 9-3 run to lead 17-11.  The Tommies couldn't overcome that distance as the Blazers went on to win 25-17.

UST controlled the final set, capitalizing on a 11-2 run at the start.  The Blazers' struggled with a .031 team hitting percentage throughout the match while the Tommies managed a .159.  That made all the difference in the match as CSB lost the final set 25-14.

The Blazers were led by senior right side hitter Kayli Schumacher (East Grand Forks, MN, Sacred Heart) and sophomore middle blocker Shannon Bassett (Eagan, MN, Eagan) who both had 10 kills.  First-year libero Chelsea Rachel (Maple Lake, MN, Maple Lake) contributed 17 digs, while first-year setter Kathyrn Gaydos (Savage, MN, Prior Lake) had 36 set assists.  Katie Bonine led the Tommies with 12 kills.

CSB plays its last regular season match on Sat., Oct. 30 at 3 p.m. in Concordia-Moorhead.  Watch the Blazers' website for news on the playoffs coming after the match.
