The College of Saint Benedict volleyball team (9-4 overall) made comebacks in the first and second set as they defeated the University of Minnesota-Morris 3-0 this afternoon in the third round of the CSB Holiday Inn-Vitational.
The Blazers began the first set with a 5-5 tie, eventually falling behind the Cougars 10-13. CSB hung on, tying the score at 21 before finally pulling ahead to win 25-22.
A similar pattern followed in the second set as CSB fell behind 9-10. With the score soon tied at 20, the Cougars inched ahead, threatening to win 24-22. A close call tied the score at 24 and gave the Blazers the edge they needed to win 26-24.
CSB controlled the final set, leading 10-8 and progressively extending that margin to 20-12 before settling the score at 25-13.
Junior right side hitter
Kayli Schumacher (East Grand Forks, MN, Sacred Heart) led the Blazers with 11 kills and a .500 hitting percentage. Outside hitters
Emma Jaynes (Hibbing, MN, Hibbing) and
Chelsie Sobieck (Wyoming, MN, Forrest Lake) also added nine kills each. Senior setter
Beth Hanson (Faribault, MN, Bethlehem Academy) had 30 sets for CSB while senior libero
Andrea Millerbernd (Littlefork, MN, Littlefork-Big Falls) contributed 11 digs toward the win.
The Blazers face Bethany Lutheran in their final match of the 2009 CSB Holiday Inn-Vitational today at 4:30 p.m.
