The Blazer softball team came up with a huge win Wednesday afternoon against Division 3 powerhouse St. Thomas. CSB (2-4 MIAC, 6-12 overall) ended the Tommie's 63 game win streak against MIAC opponents and broke UST's 37 game win streak at home. Sophomore
Elle Borba (Ontario, CA, St. Lucy's Priory) was the hero in game 1 with a grand slam in the top of the seventh inning to give the Blazers a 6-3 win. In game 2, St. Thomas bounced back with a 9-1 win in five innings.
CSB trailed 3-2 heading into the seventh inning when sophomore
Abby Richardson (Storm Lake, IA, St. Mary's) got the Blazers' rally started by drawing a walk. Next, senior outfielder
Jillian Rigg (Billings, MT, Central Catholic) singled to right and senior
Genna Strauss (Red Wing, MN, Red Wing) walked to load the bases. Then Borba blasted a ball to deep left-center field that UST left fielder Missy Bruggeman nearly tracked down, but the ball bounced off of Bruggeman's glove and over the fence for Borba's first homerun of the season.
First-year pitcher
Emma Alwin (Plymouth, MN, Wayzata) was stellar on the mound for CSB as she held the No. 2 ranked Tommies to only six hits and one earned run as she picked up her third win of the season. Strauss, Rigg, and
Devin Bowlin (Winona, MN, Winona Cotter) each had two hits for the Blazers in the win.
In game 2, the Tommies used a six-run third inning to break open the game. Sophomore
Kristen Herges (Rochester, MN, John Marshall) knocked in teammate
Alyssa Kubesh (Buffalo Lake, MN, Buffalo Lake-Hector) for the Blazers' lone run in the ballgame.
CSB will be back in action on Tuesday, April 14 when they host Macalester College starting at 4 pm.
