The College of Saint Benedict sofball team held off a late Augsburg rally in Game 1 Tuesday afternoon but were unable to answer the Auggies' bats in Game 2 and settled for a split. CSB (8-8 MIAC, 12-16 overall) took Game 1 10-9 and fell 19-7 in the nightcap.
In Game 1, CSB jumped out to a quick 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning when
Elle Borba (Ontario, CA, St. Lucy's Priory) knocked in senior
Genna Strauss (Red Wing, MN, Red Wing). With two outs in the inning, Strauss singled to right field and scored all the way from first base after Borba's single. Augsburg quickly answered with a run of their own in the top of the second inning. In the bottom of the third inning,
Devin Bowlin (Winona, MN, Winona Cotter) hit a bases clearing double and later scored on a double by
Alyssa Kubesh (Buffalo Lake, MN, Buffalo Lake-Hector). The Blazers tallied four runs in the third inning that all came after two outs were recorded. CSB added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 7-1 lead on an RBI double by
Jillian Rigg (Billings, MT, Central Catholic) and an RBI single by Bowlin. Augsburg rallied but a three run sixth inning with RBIs from Borba, Bowlin, and Kubesh helped the Blazers solidify the win.
Bowlin led the CSB offense in Game 1 by going 3-for-4 with a double, a run scored, and five RBIs. Rigg and Strauss added two hits and two RBIs each, and Borba went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. First-year pitcher
Emma Alwin (Plymouth, MN, Wayzata) picked up her seventh win of the year by going all seven innings and striking out five.
In Game 2, Augsburg used a five run fourth inning and an eight run seventh inning to put the Blazers away. The Auggies pounded out 21 hits in the game and were able to hold off a CSB rally when the Blazers cut the lead to 9-6 after four innings.
Rigg and Strauss added two hits apiece to lead the CSB offense in Game 2. Kubesh added a 2-for-3 performance at the plate as the Blazers dropped back down to an 8-8 conference record.
CSB will be back in action tomorrow, April 22nd when they travel to St. Paul, Minn. to take on Hamline University starting at 4 p.m. Hamline is currently third in the MIAC standings with a 14-4 conference record.
