The College of Saint Benedict softball team dropped a pair of games Sunday afternoon to the College of Saint Catherine in the MIAC opener for both teams. The Blazers (0-2 MIAC, 4-10 overall) collected 14 hits on the day but struggled with runners in scoring positon as they fell 3-1 in the opener and 7-1 in the nightcap.
In game 1, St. Kate's benefited from a two-out, two-RBI single in the bottom of the 1st inning, which ended up being all the Wildcats needed as they scored all three of their runs in that inning. CSB rallied in the top of the 7th inning but came up short. Senior third baseman Genna Strauss (Red Wing, MN, Red Wing) led the Blazers with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate and an RBI. First-year pitcher Emma Alwin (Plymouth, MN, Wayzata) suffered the loss for CSB but pitched five scoreless innings to keep the Blazers in the game.
In game 2, St. Kate's broke open a 1-1 tie with a five run 5th inning that the Blazers were unable to recover from. CSB got on the board first with a RBI single from senior Jillian Rigg (Billings, MT, Central Catholic) that scored sophomore Abby Richardson (Storm Lake, IA, St. Mary's) in the top of the 3rd inning.
CSB will host Carleton College in a doubleheader on Tuesday, March 31, 2009 at 4 pm.
