Taken to overtime again at the MAC in Saint Cloud, the College of Saint Benedict (6-7-2, 4-7-2 MIAC) held off Concordia College today for a 1-1 tie; earning themselves two points over the weekend series.
Playing again after an exhausting overtime game the night before, the Blazers came onto the ice in the first period picking up the momentum they finished with the game before with junior center
Janae Coauette (Crookston, MN, Crookston) finding the back of the net at 09:55. Coauette was assisted on her second goal of the season by senior forward
Ashley Davenport (Inver Grove Heights, MN, Simley) and first-year center
Jennifer Yelle (Coon Rapids, MN, Coon Rapids). Shortly after it looked as though the Blazers would strike again after sophomore Cobber goalie Julie York had her stick knocked away, but the team was unable to capitalize.
First-year goalie
Lauren Herzog (Mendota Heights, MN, Convent of the Visitation) made her fifth start in goal for the Blazers making a very impressive 41 saves on the ice while allowing only one goal. Herzog's strong play and diving saves kept the Blazers in the game late in the second and third periods.
Head coach Pat Michaud was happy with the weekend's results saying, “Two points is good; it could have been four but it could have been zero so we're happy with two. All weekend we played physical with them focusing on details and doing the little things right and for the most part we were successful this series.”
The tie lifts the Blazers to sixth in the conference standings. Gustavus Adolphus and Saint Thomas both clinched playoff spots with their victories, leaving six teams vying for the final three. Heading into their series with Hamline next weekend, the Blazers are in position for a spot, currently one point back from fifth place Saint Olaf. Saint Benedict is at home for their next game Feb 13 with face-off scheduled for 7:15 pm.
