Blazers Stay Undefeated in MIAC After Beating Macalester 75-65

The College of Saint Benedict basketball team (6-1 overall, 4-0 MIAC) defeated Macalester 75-65, handing the Scots their first MIAC loss of the season.

The Blazers jumped to the 10-4 lead in the first five minute of the half, but the Scots jumped an 8-2 run to tie the score at 12.  Points were exchanged by both teams before the score was tied at 19 with 8:30 left in the half.  At this point, CSB pulled ahead, stringing a 13-3 run to lead 32-21 with five minutes to go.  The Blazers finished the half with a 42-27 lead over the Scots.

CSB started the half with four quick points to lead by 17 with 18:45 minute remaining.  Macalester was able to bring the score within eight, but they couldn't overcome the Blazers' offense, who pulled ahead 16 points by a score of 67-51 with six minutes remaining.  CSB went on to win 75-65.

The Blazers were led by junior wing Amy Stifter, who had 18 points and also grabbed seven rebounds.  Junior post Heather Gillund contributed 17 points and dominated the boards with 11 rebounds.  Junior wing Joelle Waytashek also contributed 10 points toward the win.

This game concludes the 2009 portion of CSB's season.  They kick of 2010 with a home game against St. Mary's on Sat., Jan. 2 at 3 p.m.  This is also Take a Kid to the Game Day, a program in which the NCAA encourages adults to take children to a collegiate sporting event.  The day provides kids with the opportunity to experience college basketball at its finest.
