Blazers Swept by Bethel

BOX SCORE

Returning to the MAC in Saint Cloud for their series finale with Bethel University, the College of Saint Benedict (1-6-2, 0-4-2 MIAC) was shutout in their attempt for their first MIAC win of the season. With the 1-0 loss, the Blazers say goodbye to 2009 and look forward to the 2010 year; which begins with the team traveling to Pittsburg to play in the Penguins NHL ice hockey area against Chatham University.

Both teams started the game out with high intensity, fast paced play while neither side yielded a goal. Sophomore goalie Lauren Herzog (Mendota Heights, MN, Convent of the Visitation) yielded only one goal all game while making good saves and holding rebounds well. Herzog made 28 total saves on the day.

Despite controlling play at times and playing well defensively, the Blazers were not able generate enough offense; getting outshot 29-10 by the Royals.

“We are struggling offensively right now. We had some quality chances to score, but were not getting any bounces or breaks,” said head coach Pat Michaud. “All we can do is keep working hard and convert those chances in our next game. The MIAC is a very completive league and every weekend most games are decided by one or fewer goals. We are in those one game goals but we are just not winning.”

Sophomore Royals defender Paige Lemieux scored the winning goal for the team, her fourth of the year, at 10:42 in the second period.

First year defender Catherine Pollock (Tonka Bay, MN, Hopkins High School) and first year forward Kaley Flynn (West St. Paul, MN, Henry Sibley High School) led the Blazers with two shots recorded on net during the game.

The Blazers return to action January 8th and 9th when they travel to Pittsburg, home of Chatham University Cougars.
