Blazers Coast Past Cardinals 70-41

01/31/2009

The College of Saint Benedict basketball team coasted past St. Mary's University 70-41, remaining undefeated at home and extending their winning streak to four games this afternoon in Claire Lynch.

The first half started out a little rocky for the CSB, with no scoring in the first two minutes and allowing SMU to take a 5-2 lead with 15 minutes remaining.  With a score of 8-7, the Blazers pulled ahead of the Cardinals for good with 11:40 on the clock.  Over the next ten minutes, CSB took an 18-9 run over SMU, heading into halftime with a low-scoring 26-16 lead over the Cardinals.

The Blazers came out on fire, combining two runs of 7-0 and 14-7 over seven minutes of play.  They continued to extend the scoring margin over the course of the half, at one point leading by 35 points.  The Blazers were able to force 18 Cardinal turnovers, only coming nine themselves, and ending the game 70-41.  With Concordia's loss to Bethel, this win gives CSB sole possession of the first-place position in the MIAC.

A collection of sophomores led the game today, including wings Amy Stifter (Watertown, MN, Watertown-Mayer) and Joelle Waytashek (Lino Lakes, MN, Centennial), who had 14 and 12 points respectively.  Sophomore post Danielle Frank (Caledonia, MN, Caledonia) also had nine rebounds for the Blazers.

Up next the Blazers travel to St. Paul, Minn., to take on Macalester on Mon., Feb 2 at 7:30 p.m.
