Facing a series where they “pretty much had to sweep to have a chance at the playoffs,” said head coach Pat Michaud, the College of Saint Benedict (4-4-0 MIAC, 6-4-0 overall) did just that winning 3-0 today at Augsburg Ice Area.
In a game that was much tighter than the scoreboard indicated, senior forward
Patty King (St. Paul, MN, Cretin-Derham Hall), and sophomore forwards
Holly Reinking (Maple Grove, MN, Elk River) and
Gretchen Leyendecker (Rochester, MN, Lourdes) accounted for all of the Blazers three goals and five assists. King scored her first goal of the year, and first of the game for the Blazers at 6:22 in the second period. Just under 10 minutes later in the same period, Leyendecker made it 2-0 scoring at 15:25 off of Reinking. The goal capped off a great series by Leyendecker in which she finished with four goals and three assists. Early in the third period Reinking put the Blazers up for good when she scored her first goal of the season at 5:44.
The Blazers head into next weekend's MIAC series against the College of Saint Catherine with a legitimate shot push their winning streak to four games while climbing up the standings latter with a sweep. The first game of the series is January 23 at the MAC in Saint Cloud. The puck will drop at 7:30 pm.
