Blazers Split in Opening Day at Augsburg

 The College of Saint Benedict volleyball team defeated Wisconsin-Superior 3-0 and fell short to the University St. Thomas 2-3 in the first day of tournament play at Augsburg College.

 The Blazers opened the day against the Superior Yellowjackets and sailed past them in 3 games, winning 25-12, 25-15 and 25-8. Junior Emma Jaynes (Hibbing, MN, Hibbing) and Sophomore Kayli Schumacher (East Grand Forks, MN, Sacred Heart) guided the Blazers to victory with eight and seven kills, respectively. Jess Ebel lead the Yellowjackets with six kills.

The second match of the day was against MIAC rival St. Thomas in a well-fought match.  The Blazers fell in the first game 18-25 but came back strong in the next two games, winning 25-12 and 25-22.  But the Tommies, who are ranked first in the MIAC, did not give up and came back to win the next two games 16-25 and 11-15 to win the match.

 The College of Saint Benedict (4-2) plays on Saturday, September 6th to continue tournament play against Northwester College at 11 am.
