The College of Saint Benedict Blazers (0-1 MIAC, 3-2 overall) fell to the University of St. Thomas Tommies (1-0 MIAC, 4-0 overall) in the crisp hours of the late afternoon today, September 10th, in St. Joseph, Minn. The Tommies defeated the Blazers 3-0 in both teams' first MIAC game, despite a well fought contest.
In both halves, the Tommies out fouled the Blazers 8-5, in a very aggressive battle for a MIAC win. The Tommies scored 16:01 into the first half, and again in the second, with 34:36 left in the half. Sophomore goal keeper Maija Schmelzer (Rochester, MN, John Marshall) rejected six goal attempts. The second half brought much better play for the Blazers overall. Although the Blazers notched up their defensive play, The Tommies snuck past defenders and scored their third goal in the final five minutes of the game.
The College of Saint Benedict Blazers will play another MIAC game on Sunday, September 14th, against Carleton College in Northfield, Minn at 1 p.m.
